The hip hop music seen was born when DJ Kool Herc began to use two copies of the same record to repeat and extend the break for the benefit of break-boys in his native NYC. Herc continued to play at block parties in the West Bronx housing projects, slowly building the b-boy population.
Rising in popularity during the late seventies, Herc was eventually overtaken by Grandmaster Flash and Africa Bamabaata - who go on to take over his mantel as the top djs of hip hop music. Throughout the 80's The Sugarhill Gang join their ranks as the records they produce add to the groundswell of growing popularity in the dance community. 1986 sees hip hop music as the leading style of black popular music amongst urban teenagers, lead by the success of the New York Def Jam label whose artists such as Public Enemy, LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys appealed to the like of white and black listeners alike.
Grand Master Flash joined Africa Bambataata at the UK's first hip hop music festival held at the Wembley arena and called appropriately enough "Fresh". Mainstream artists such as Blondie and Aerosmith provided further momentum for the movement by including rap artists in their music videos.

The gap between the rapidly moving UK scene and US music was further reduced by dj Time Westwood who, building on his earlier Capitol Radio show started the radio 1 Rap Show.Now hip hop music is one of the most popular music genres of all time and has grown ethnically diverse as music cultures from around the world have embraced the sound and in turn adapted the music and its content to their own cultures and lifestyles.
