A dj mixing two tracks at 122 beats per minute (BPM), and 128 BPM -- will either slow the second song down to 128 BPM using pitch control, or slightly speed up the first and cue it up to the beat. When the dj is ready to bring the second track into play, he will "throw" the vinyl (i.e., hit the play button on the "1 count") so the beats stay aligned. The dj mixing the tracks will listen to it on their headphones for at least 32 counts to ensure that they are in sync.
If they are not in sync, the + and - "Pitch Bend" buttons on the mixer are used to gently speed up or slow down the second song in the dj mixing headphones. Once the dj is sure things are in order, the cross-fader or individual channel controls are used to let the new song blend into the old one, and eventually go completely across so only the new song is playing.
